Lago di Braies in Winter
In winter, Lago di Braies shows a completely different face — quieter, sterner, almost meditative. Where thousands of visitors fill the loop trail in July, January leaves the snow untouched. For anyone who wants to see the lake outside the high season, winter offers the calmest and most authentic version of it. Here is what to expect and how to plan.
Is Lago di Braies accessible in winter?
Yes. The access road into the Braies Valley is usually open and cleared of snow throughout the winter. The reservation system only applies from 1 July to 15 September — in winter, access is completely free. However, from 15 November every vehicle on South Tyrol's state and provincial roads must carry winter tyres or snow chains. This is a legal requirement, not a suggestion.
Bus 442 also runs in winter on a reduced schedule. For visitors without a car, the bus is the simplest option.
The best winter months
December: Christmas atmosphere without a market
In December the first real snow settles over the valley. The lake is usually not fully frozen yet, the landscape turns quiet, almost ceremonial. One thing to know up front: there is no Christmas market at Lago di Braies. For markets, you'll need to head to San Candido, Dobbiaco or Brunico.
January and February: ice and silence
January and February are the coldest months. The lake usually freezes completely, a thick layer of ice forms, and the atmosphere becomes almost surreally silent. For winter photographers, these are the most spectacular weeks of the year. Important: walking on the frozen lake is prohibited. The ice often looks more stable than it actually is, and the official notices are clearly posted.
March: transition
March brings milder weather; the ice starts to melt and crack. The shore paths partially reopen, and the landscape begins to hint at spring. The most wintry shots are already behind you, but huts start reopening for the season.
What you can do at the lake in winter
The loop trail (partially)
The classic loop is only partially walkable in winter. The west side — wide and usually cleared — extends well to the south. The east side, with its stone steps and rock passages, is often closed in winter. The municipal signage shows the current safety status.
Snowshoe tours
Snowshoe tours from Schmieden up to the lake or along the surrounding forest roads are a wonderful option for experienced winter walkers. They last several hours and require proper equipment.
Winter photography
The frozen lake, the snow-white Dolomite peaks, and the low winter sun make Lago di Braies one of the most photogenic winter subjects in South Tyrol. Early morning — just after sunrise — is when the colours are at their most intense.
Food and drink
Not every hut and restaurant in the valley is open in winter. Some establishments in the Braies Valley remain available, and the Hotel Lago di Braies offers seasonal menus. Always check in advance.
What you cannot do in winter
• Swim or walk on the lake: prohibited and dangerous, even when the ice looks solid.
• Rent a boat: the boat rental is closed in winter.
• Visit a Christmas market: none is held at the lake.
• Complete the full loop in all conditions: in heavy snow winters, only the western shore stays open.
Equipment and safety
• Warm layers: temperatures at the lake can drop to −10 °C or lower.
• Winter boots or micro spikes: essential on icy sections.
• Gloves, hat, sunglasses: the snow glare at altitude is intense.
• Snow chains in the car: even on a cleared road, a fresh snowfall can suddenly make chains mandatory.
• Plan an early return: winter days are short, leave a safety margin.
Getting there in winter
• By car: no reservation needed; winter tyres or chains required. Parking lots near the lake are open but smaller than in summer.
• By Bus 442: reduced winter schedule; included in many regional travel passes.
• On foot from Schmieden: only for experienced winter walkers with the right gear.
